Mercadona Announces Major Lisbon Expansion with New Stores in Alta de Lisboa and Quinta do Lambert

The Spanish retail chain Mercadona has formally announced its expansion into the city of Lisbon, with two supermarkets scheduled to open in November. The new stores will be located in the residential areas of Alta de Lisboa and Quinta do Lambert. This development is part of the company's broader strategy for Portugal, which also includes its first entry into the Algarve region in 2026 with stores in Portimão and Faro. The company's continued investment underscores the growth of local neighborhood economies and infrastructure.

The announcement confirms the opening of the first two Mercadona stores within Lisbon's city limits, adding to its growing network which will reach 65 stores in Portugal by the end of the year. The Lisbon locations in Alta de Lisboa and Quinta do Lambert were chosen as part of a strategic plan to serve densely populated residential zones. These openings are part of a 10-store expansion plan for the current year, which also includes new locations in Frielas (Loures) and Palmela, both within the wider Lisbon metropolitan area, scheduled to open on 16 October.

This expansion is supported by a significant logistical investment, including a 290-million-euro logistics block in Almeirim, which will facilitate the company's operations across the southern half of the country. The total investment in Portugal has now surpassed 1.1 billion euros since Mercadona began its operations in the country in 2019. For the current year, the company has planned an investment of over 157 million euros, reflecting its commitment to the Portuguese market. This expansion is also a source of local employment, with the company already employing approximately 7,000 people and actively recruiting for 200 new positions in the Algarve.
