Sesimbra Launches 'Uau Sesimbra!' Digital Commercial District to Modernize Traditional Commerce
The Sesimbra Municipal Council, in partnership with the Association of Hotelaria, Restauração e Serviços de Portugal (AHRESP), has officially launched the 'Uau Sesimbra!' project, a Bairro Comercial Digital (Digital Commercial District) funded by the Plano de Recuperação e Resiliência (PRR). The initiative, presented at a ceremony in the Fortaleza de Santiago on September 1st, is designed to integrate a suite of technological solutions into the town's traditional commerce and public spaces, aiming to stimulate the local economy and advance the region's digital transition. The project introduces a centralized digital commerce platform, offering local businesses tools for online sales, payment processing, delivery logistics, and service reservations, all provided free of charge to participating establishments.
The core of the 'Uau Sesimbra!' initiative is a comprehensive digital platform and marketplace that will unify the town's commercial offerings. This system will allow consumers to purchase goods online for home delivery, utilize a 'click-and-collect' service via in-store pickup or digital lockers, and make reservations at local restaurants. According to a statement from the municipality, the primary goal is to 'divulgar, disponibilizar e incentivar o uso das novas tecnologias no comércio tradicional,' thereby boosting sales and creating new operational dynamics. Participating businesses will be identified by the project's official logo, signaling their integration into this new digital ecosystem.
In addition to the commercial platform, the project encompasses a significant upgrade to the town's public infrastructure. This includes the deployment of a free, public 5G Wi-Fi network, the installation of interactive digital information panels, and the implementation of smart city solutions for mobility. These solutions feature a network of sensors for real-time monitoring of traffic flow and parking space availability. The system will guide drivers to open spots, aiming to reduce congestion. Furthermore, the project includes the installation of 'papeleiras inteligentes' (smart bins) to optimize waste management and two smart crosswalks at key intersections to enhance pedestrian safety.
A key advantage highlighted by the project's proponents is the capacity for data collection and analysis. The system will gather aggregated, anonymized data on metrics such as sales volumes, foot traffic patterns, and peak commercial hours. This information will be processed by a dedicated Bairro manager and disseminated to local entrepreneurs to support data-driven decision-making and help them tailor their services and operating hours to consumer behavior. Mayor Francisco Jesus stated during the presentation that this data will enable business owners to 'adequem a sua oferta em função da informação que lhes é transmitida,' fostering a more efficient and responsive commercial environment.
The project's development began with the drafting of the PRR candidacy in 2022, which received approval in late 2023 and was formally contracted in 2024. Since then, project manager Susana Brites and various municipal departments have been coordinating the implementation of the required technological infrastructure. The initial rollout is geographically delimited to the core of Sesimbra village as per the PRR funding requirements. However, municipal officials have publicly stated their long-term intention to broaden the project's scope to include businesses throughout the entire concelho of Sesimbra.
The launch event was attended by key stakeholders, including Mayor Francisco Jesus, AHRESP President Carlos Moura, Municipal Assembly President João Narciso, and Santiago Parish President Laura Correia. Their presence underscores the collaborative nature of the initiative, which brings together public governance and a major national business association. The project is positioned not only as a tool for economic stimulus but also as a critical step in the broader national strategy for digital transformation, leveraging European recovery funds to create sustainable local development.
The integration of these technologies is expected to enhance the overall attractiveness of Sesimbra for both residents and tourists. The convenience of a unified digital marketplace, coupled with improvements in mobility and connectivity, aims to create a more seamless and modern urban experience. While the direct impact on the residential real estate market was not a stated focus, such significant public and commercial infrastructure upgrades are widely seen as positive drivers for property values and investment appeal in the medium to long term.
The 'Uau Sesimbra!' project will be progressively implemented, with the first wave of technologies and services now being installed and made available to merchants who have opted into the program. The municipality will provide support and training to ensure local business owners can fully leverage the new digital tools. All data processing and management will be conducted in compliance with GDPR and other relevant privacy regulations to ensure the security of user and business information.
The long-term vision for the Bairro Comercial Digital involves creating a deeply interconnected local economy where digital tools and physical commerce are fully integrated. This includes exploring future technological enhancements and expanding the types of data analytics available to merchants. The success of the initial phase in Sesimbra village will serve as a model for its potential expansion and for similar initiatives in other Portuguese municipalities.
