Techem and xelerate.tech Launch “Techem Xelerate” IoT Software Hub in Porto

The energy management solutions company Techem has partnered with the technology firm xelerate.tech to establish “Techem Xelerate,” a new software development center located in Porto. This joint venture will focus on advancing digital solutions for the real estate sector, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and promote decarbonization in buildings across Europe.

Techem currently operates one of the largest industrial Internet of Things (IoT) infrastructures in Europe, managing over 62 million digital metering devices in more than 13 million residences. This network facilitates large-scale monitoring of energy consumption and equipment performance. The company's services are designed to help the real estate industry reduce energy use, operational costs, and CO₂ emissions through low-investment, minimally invasive technologies. These efforts directly address the decarbonization goals for the property sector, which is responsible for an estimated 40% of global CO₂ emissions.

The new Digital Platform Hub in Porto is set to become a critical component in the evolution of Techem's digital platform, which provides services across 18 countries. Christian Klöppel, Director of Digital Transformation at Techem, commented on the choice of location. “Porto's vibrant tech scene and exceptional talent make the city the perfect location for our new tech hub,” he stated. “Juntamente com a xelerate.tech, estamos a explorar a energia inovadora da cidade não só para desenvolver ainda mais a nossa principal plataforma digital para digitalizar e descarbonizar o setor da construção em toda a Europa e além, mas também para acelerar o futuro digital da Techem.”

The Porto hub will concentrate on developing IoT platforms, cloud-native applications, data analytics, and other software solutions geared towards energy efficiency. According to the company, the development process will utilize agile methodologies and modern technology stacks to produce impactful digital tools that support sustainable building operations. The partnership with xelerate.tech is structured to build high-performance teams and co-create a resilient technology foundation to support Techem's future growth and accelerate the time-to-market for new solutions.

Techem Xelerate Portugal has announced plans to hire approximately 40 to 50 new employees within the next two years. The company justified its selection of Porto by highlighting the city's dynamic technology ecosystem, its highly skilled talent pool, and its close ties to prestigious universities. The city's growing reputation as an international technology center made it an ideal choice for a hub focused on developing digital solutions for sustainable construction.
