Sintra Train Station Roof Rehabilitation Completed with €500,000 Investment

Sotecnisol Engenharia e Ambiente has announced the conclusion of a significant rehabilitation project on the roofs of the Sintra train station, a critical infrastructure node in the Lisbon metropolitan region. The intervention required an investment of approximately half a million euros and was aimed at the structural and functional restoration of the facility, alongside a comprehensive energy modernization. The project addresses long-standing needs for one of Portugal's most emblematic and heavily transited railway stations, ensuring its preservation and enhanced performance for daily commuters and tourists. José Luís Castro, the CEO of Grupo Sotecnisol, remarked that the project was a technically demanding undertaking due to the necessity of working on an active, operational structure, but that its successful completion demonstrates the company's capacity to deliver complex, integrated engineering solutions.

The scope of the project included several critical improvements designed to guarantee the safety and durability of the station's infrastructure. A primary focus was the complete renewal of the waterproofing and drainage systems across the roof surfaces, a measure essential for protecting the building from water ingress and weather-related degradation. Concurrently, the metallic support pillars and roof trusses underwent a thorough rehabilitation process, including specialized anti-corrosion treatments to reinforce the structural integrity of the covering and significantly extend the service life of these core components. These structural reinforcements are vital for maintaining the safety standards of a public facility that serves thousands of passengers each day.

In line with Grupo Sotecnisol's commitment to sustainability, the project also incorporated a significant energy efficiency component. This part of the intervention was managed by KeepOn – Instalação e Manutenção, a subsidiary of the group that specializes in energy solutions. KeepOn was tasked with the complete replacement of the existing light fixtures on the station's platforms. The installation of new, modern luminaires has substantially improved the quality of illumination, thereby increasing safety and comfort for passengers, while also delivering a major reduction in energy consumption and associated operational and maintenance costs. This upgrade aligns the historic station with contemporary environmental and efficiency standards.

The rehabilitation of the Sintra station is a key investment in the public transport infrastructure of the region, reflecting a broader strategy of modernizing essential services. The project not only enhances the passenger experience but also ensures the structural longevity of a historically significant building. The works were carefully planned to minimize disruption to the station's daily operations, a key challenge in any project involving public infrastructure. The successful completion of this half-million-euro project underscores a commitment to investing in the maintenance and improvement of Portugal's public assets, which is crucial for supporting the local economy and the quality of life for its residents.
