Tender Launched for €3.2 Million Barra Marina in Santa Cruz da Graciosa
The municipal government of Santa Cruz da Graciosa in the Azores has formally initiated the public tender process for the construction of the new Barra marina. The project, which local officials have described as “highly significant” for the island's development, has a budget of approximately €3.2 million. The official announcement was published in the Jornal Oficial, setting a deadline of August 27 for the submission of proposals from interested construction firms.
The project's base price is listed as €3,210,028.62, excluding VAT, with a projected completion period of 600 days. António Reis, the Mayor of Santa Cruz da Graciosa, representing the 'Somos Todos Graciosa' coalition, described the marina as a long-awaited “structural investment” for the island in a statement to the Lusa news agency. He highlighted that the tender was approved unanimously by the municipal council and that it represents the largest public works project ever undertaken by the municipality.
“The coastal protection phase is complete, and we are now moving forward with the recreational marina, something the people of Graciosa have been waiting for,” stated Mayor Reis. He acknowledged the complexity involved in preparing the tender documentation but expressed confidence that the project would attract bidders, noting that several potential companies have already made inquiries. The project's financial viability was bolstered in October 2023 when the Regional Government of the Azores, led by President José Manuel Bolieiro, confirmed its financial support through a formal investment contract known as an Acordo ARAAL.
The scope of the development is extensive and designed to support nautical tourism and recreational boating. The plans include the construction of a 225-meter breakwater and an 80-meter pier. Additionally, the project will create a 3,500-square-meter reclaimed land area. Key infrastructure will feature the dredging of the marina basin and access channel, the installation of floating docks, and the construction of a fuel supply station. The development will be completed with service buildings, security and control facilities, and full utility connections to serve the needs of visitors and residents.
Officials expect the new marina to provide a significant boost to the local economy by enhancing Graciosa's appeal as a destination for maritime tourism. The investment is seen as a critical step in the long-term economic strategy for the island, aiming to create new opportunities and improve local amenities. The progress of the tender and subsequent construction will be closely watched by local stakeholders and the regional government.
