Porto Metrobus Construction Begins on Key Avenida da Boavista Section
Metro do Porto has officially announced that construction work for the second phase of the metrobus project, connecting Boavista to Anémona, will commence on Monday. The initial project development will be focused on a specific segment of the route, with the construction company starting work on the dedicated central bus lane of Avenida da Boavista. This first section of the new phase extends from Rua Jorge Reinel, near the Colégio do Rosário, to the area around the Garcia de Orta School.
The project specifications detail that this stage of the construction will last for approximately three months. Metro do Porto has assured that the work is planned to cause minimal disruption, as it will be contained entirely within the central bus corridor and will not affect major intersections such as the one with Avenida do Dr. Antunes Guimarães. The Municipal Police will be present to oversee the construction site and ensure traffic management proceeds smoothly. The total length of this construction segment is approximately one kilometer.
This construction project is a significant step in expanding Porto's public transport infrastructure. The metrobus line is designed to provide a rapid and efficient connection for commuters. The planned service will utilize a fleet of hydrogen-powered buses, which have already been acquired as part of a €29.5 million investment that also includes the feeding infrastructure. The architectural design of the vehicles is intended to be visually similar to the city's existing metro trains.

In a parallel development, project designers are actively working on an alternative solution for a subsequent section of the route, between the planned Garcia de Orta and Castelo do Queijo stations. This redesign was requested by the Porto City Council to mitigate the project's environmental impact. The revised plan is expected to prevent the direct felling of 86 trees, although Metro do Porto has noted that this change could potentially lead to a slightly longer travel time than initially advertised.
The transport authority has also confirmed that these project adjustments will not jeopardize the project's European Union funding. The timeline remains compatible with the completion deadlines stipulated under the PRR/NextGenerationEU recovery funds, ensuring the financial viability of the construction. The project has been a topic of local political discussion, with the current mayor, Rui Moreira, stating that final decisions regarding the operation of the first phase will be left to the next municipal administration after the upcoming elections.
Although the infrastructure for the first phase of the metrobus is complete and the vehicles are ready, the service has not yet started. The central channel on Avenida da Boavista is currently being used by cyclists and scooter users. The commencement of this new construction phase signals a concrete advancement in the project, which is expected to enhance connectivity and influence real estate dynamics along one of Porto's most important avenues.
