Lidl Unveils New €8 Million Supermarket in Massamá, Sintra
\nThe German supermarket chain Lidl inaugurated a completely new store in Massamá this Thursday, following an €8 million investment to redevelop its previous location. The project, situated on Rua D. Inês de Castro next to the Casal da Barota Urban Park in the municipality of Sintra, underscores the company's ongoing strategy to modernize its Portuguese store network and strengthen its presence in local communities.
\nThe new building features a modern architectural design with the main sales area of 1,400 square meters located on the ground floor and a 153-space car park on the upper level, of which 46 spaces are covered. Company officials stated that the new layout is designed to be more efficient and appealing, providing customers with a more comfortable and fluid shopping experience. The construction replaces an older, outdated Lidl store that previously occupied the site.
\nThis development represents a significant capital investment in the Sintra municipality, a key residential and economic hub within the Lisbon metropolitan area. The project specifications highlight a focus on customer convenience and an expanded service offering. In addition to its standard range of food and non-food products, the Massamá store now includes a self-service bakery with a bread-slicing machine, a hot food section with roasted chicken, and a dedicated cod-cutting service. To improve checkout efficiency, six self-service payment terminals have been installed alongside traditional cashier-operated lanes.
\nIn line with Lidl's corporate sustainability goals, the new structure is equipped with energy-efficient LED lighting throughout. It also includes a public charging station for electric vehicles, which can service two cars simultaneously. This feature allows customers to charge their vehicles while shopping, a service that is becoming increasingly standard in new retail developments across Portugal as EV adoption grows.
\nThe investment also reinforces Lidl's position as a major employer in the region. The company currently employs 275 people across its operations in Sintra. The opening ceremony was attended by local officials and company representatives who emphasized the project's importance for the local economy. The store is expected to serve the growing population of Massamá and the surrounding parishes.
\nLidl also confirmed its continued partnership with the Mira Sintra Parish Social Center through its 'Realimenta' food donation program. The company reported that during the 2024 fiscal year, its existing Massamá store donated nearly 112 tons of food products to the association, benefiting over 1,600 people. This social responsibility initiative will continue with the new store, aiming to combat food waste and support vulnerable populations in the community.
\nThe project was executed by a local construction firm, with planning and design phases managed by Lidl's internal real estate and construction department. The €8 million investment covers land acquisition, demolition of the previous structure, construction of the new building, and interior fittings. The store officially opened its doors to the public following a brief inauguration ceremony on Thursday morning.
