Braga to Launch €7 Million Bio-MedTech Hub with 22 Laboratories
The municipality of Braga has announced a seven-million-euro investment for the creation of a Bio-MedTech Hub, which is projected to create 100 new highly qualified jobs and feature 22 laboratories. The facility is expected to be operational by 2028, with construction scheduled to commence in 2026. According to the municipality, over 20 companies have already formally registered their interest in establishing a presence within the new Center for Valorization and Technology Transfer (CVTT).
This project is being led by InvestBraga, via its Startup Braga incubator, and will be financed through a combination of public funds. Community funds will cover 65% of the total investment, with the Braga municipality providing the remaining 35%. An application for financing has been submitted to the North 2030 Regional Program to secure the necessary capital for the works. The hub will be situated adjacent to the Fórum Braga.
Ricardo Rio, the Mayor of Braga, stated that the project is essential for establishing the city as an international benchmark in the future economy. “With the Bio-MedTech Hub, and after the attribution of the title Rising Innovative City by the European Innovation Council, Braga prepares to consolidate its position as a European pole of innovation in life and health sciences, attracting investment, talent, and high-value-added companies,” the mayor remarked.
The facility will occupy a space of over 5,000 square meters across three floors. It is designed to support applied research, technological development, and the incubation of deep-tech startups. The infrastructure will include 22 lab spaces, four of which will be specialized for microscopy, microbiology, molecular biology, and cell culture. Additionally, it will house 16 offices, six meeting rooms, and a 144-seat auditorium, accommodating approximately 110 professionals.
The municipality has confirmed that several nationally and internationally recognized startups are among the interested parties. These include RUBYnanomed, PeekMed, BestHealth4U, and AI4MedImaging, all of which are recipients of funding from the European Commission's EIC Accelerator program. The project is supported by a consortium of strategic partners, including the University of Minho, the Academic Clinical Center of Braga, the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory, and the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave (IPCA), among others.
