Grupo Casais inaugurates new €17 million student residence in Beja
A new student residence has been inaugurated in Beja, the result of a €17 million investment by the construction company Grupo Casais. The facility, which will provide housing for 503 students, primarily from the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, was officially opened in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Minister of Education Fernando Alexandre, and the President of the Polytechnic Institute of Beja, Fátima Carvalho.
The residence consists of 327 rooms, including single, double, and studio apartments. In a move towards greater inclusivity, 15 of these rooms are adapted for people with reduced mobility. The building also features extensive common areas, such as study rooms, shared kitchens and dining areas, a laundry, a gym, and technical zones, all designed to promote a sense of community among the residents. The project was furnished by IKEA, ensuring that the spaces are ready for immediate occupancy.
This is the second student residence that Grupo Casais has completed using the innovative CREE Buildings system, a hybrid construction method that combines wood and concrete. This industrialized approach is designed to be more sustainable than traditional building techniques, reducing the environmental impact of the project. The use of this system allowed for the project to be delivered on time and within budget.

António Carlos Rodrigues, CEO of Grupo Casais, stated that the residence is an “important milestone for Beja and for the construction sector.” He emphasized the company's ability to deliver a “sustainable, inclusive project on time—without cost overruns—that will improve the lives of more than 500 students.” The new residence is expected to alleviate some of the pressure on the local housing market and provide much-needed quality accommodation for the student population of Beja.
The inauguration of this residence reflects a broader effort to expand and modernize student housing across Portugal, supported by both public and private investment. While Beja is a smaller market compared to Lisbon or Porto, this development indicates a commitment to improving educational infrastructure throughout the country.
