EDP and CTT Announce Integration of 200 Locations into Solar Neighborhoods Program

Energy company EDP and CTT – Correios de Portugal have formalized an agreement to include 200 CTT stores and distribution centers as consumers within the EDP Solar Neighborhoods initiative. The announcement, made this Wednesday, details that these CTT facilities will now be powered by renewable energy generated within their local communities. This strategic move allows CTT locations that lack the physical capacity for their own solar panel installations to utilize clean energy produced nearby.

The model operates by designating certain EDP partners, often small and medium-sized enterprises with available space for solar installations, as local energy producers. The surplus energy they generate is then supplied to “neighbors” within the same solar community, which now includes the 200 CTT facilities. Officials from both companies stated that this innovative structure supports Portugal’s national decarbonization goals.

This new contract expands upon a partnership that began in 2022. The initial phase resulted in the installation of over 20 solar power plants at CTT properties across the country. These existing plants were designed with the capacity to share energy, potentially benefiting more than four thousand families and small businesses in their vicinity. With the latest development, CTT now functions as both a producer and a consumer within the EDP Solar Neighborhoods framework.

According to the terms of the program, energy producers can achieve savings of up to 60% on the cost of their self-consumed power. Consumers, or “neighbors,” can in turn see their monthly energy costs reduced by approximately 30%. This creates a direct financial incentive for participation in the community energy scheme.

The collaboration between EDP and CTT also extends to electric mobility. The two entities had previously agreed to establish the country's largest private electric vehicle charging network. An initial phase saw 580 charging points installed at over 100 CTT locations. This year, the network was augmented with an additional 200 charging points. This infrastructure supports CTT's fleet of over 1,100 electric and hybrid vehicles, which are powered by green energy supplied by EDP.

A representative for CTT reiterated the company's environmental targets, which include a 55% reduction in total carbon emissions by 2030, compared to a 2021 baseline. This goal is being pursued through enhanced energy efficiency, fleet electrification, and investments in renewable energy. For EDP, the expansion of the Solar Neighborhoods is aligned with its strategic ambition to grow its network of solar communities throughout Portugal.
