Tax Payment Deadlines for IMI and IRS Conclude on August 31
The Tax and Customs Authority (AT) has reminded taxpayers in Portugal that the deadline for payment of Personal Income Tax (IRS) and the second installment of the Municipal Property Tax (IMI) is August 31. The IRS payment is due from individuals who, after submitting their annual tax declaration between April and June, were issued a collection notice indicating an amount to be paid. The standard deadline is August 31, but as this date falls on a Sunday this year, the deadline is extended to the following Monday, September 1.
The IMI payment obligation applies to all individuals and entities who were registered owners of real estate properties, such as houses, land, or commercial spaces, on December 31 of the preceding year. This tax is collected by the central Tax and Customs Authority but its revenue is directed to the respective municipalities where the properties are located. The payment schedule for IMI is determined by the total amount of the tax liability.
For property owners whose total IMI liability is greater than 500 euros, the tax is payable in installments. The deadline for the second of these installments is August 31. Consistent with the extension for the IRS payment, this deadline is also effectively moved to September 1 due to the weekend. The authorities have specified that failure to meet this payment deadline will lead to the imposition of late payment interest and may also result in fines for non-compliance.
This reminder serves as a critical notice for all property owners and taxpayers to ensure their financial obligations are met in a timely manner to avoid penalties. The tax authority's systems are prepared to process payments up to the extended deadline. Taxpayers are advised to verify their specific obligations through the official tax portal or with their financial advisors to ensure compliance with the national tax code.
