Portugal Announces €5 Million Investment for Nationwide River Restoration and Flood Defense
The Portuguese government, through the Ministry of Environment and Energy, has announced an investment of five million euros to rehabilitate and restore 168 kilometers of rivers and streams across the country. This initiative is part of the broader ProRios 2030 strategy, which aims to enhance the health of aquatic ecosystems and bolster the nation's resilience to climate change. The plan also includes work on the Díz and Noéme rivers in Guarda and the Alfusqueiro river in Águeda. For communities in and around major expatriate and investment hubs, the plan includes the enhancement of the Lizandro river in Mafra and a large-scale, 60-kilometer requalification of the Vascão Stream in the Algarve.
The ProRios 2030 strategy, subtitled “Água que une” (Water that unites), is designed to promote integrated and sustainable management of water resources. A primary objective is to restore degraded watercourses to a more natural state, which includes creating controlled flood areas. These measures are expected to significantly reduce the risks associated with severe weather events, such as the floods and droughts that have impacted Portugal in recent years. The Ministry's announcement clarified that these interventions are a “decisive step in the implementation of the National Restoration Plan,” which is currently under development.
