Almada Launches Major Road Reformulation Project at Rotunda do Brejo
The Câmara Municipal de Almada (CMA) has officially commenced the 'Reformulação de Acesso Rodoviário à Rotunda do Brejo' project, a major infrastructure undertaking that will cause significant traffic restrictions on Avenida Henrique Barbeitos (ER10) until its projected completion date of February 28, 2026. The project aims to reconfigure a key traffic hub that serves as a primary conduit to the Ponte 25 de Abril via the Centro Sul tunnel.
In a public notice, the CMA detailed that the construction will necessitate a lane reduction, creating a funnel effect on the approach to the roundabout. Municipal authorities have cautioned that this will likely lead to severe traffic congestion, especially during morning and evening peak periods. The works are deemed essential for modernizing the junction to support current and future traffic loads in the rapidly developing municipality.
The project's specifications involve a complete redesign of the road layout approaching the roundabout, improving traffic flow and safety. Funding for the multi-year project has been secured through the municipal budget, with potential co-financing from national infrastructure funds. An official from the municipal planning department stated, “This is a strategic and necessary intervention. While there will be unavoidable disruption, the end result will be a significant improvement in mobility for the entire southern corridor of Almada.”
The public transport operator, Carris Metropolitana, has also issued a service alert, indicating that lines 3506 (Cacilhas – Corroios) and 3525 (Hospital Garcia de Orta – Miratejo) will be subject to significant delays and potential detours for the duration of the works. Commuters are being advised to consult the operator's app for real-time updates. For investors, understanding the long-term vision for an area is key. This project, while disruptive now, points to a future of improved accessibility. For more on this, see our Geographic and Sector Deep Dives blog.

The extended duration of the project, spanning over a year, reflects the complexity of the engineering work involved. It includes not only resurfacing but also adjustments to underground utilities and the implementation of new traffic signaling systems. Local businesses and residents have been briefed on the project's phases to mitigate the impact as much as possible. The long-term goal is to increase the roundabout's capacity and reduce chronic congestion that has plagued the area.
This infrastructure upgrade is part of a wider municipal plan for urban regeneration in Almada. Similar projects are being planned for other key arteries in the municipality. Analysts suggest that such investments are critical for sustaining the region's economic growth and its attractiveness as a residential location. Staying informed on these developments is crucial for anyone involved in the local property market.
