Lisbon Metro Receives Environmental Approval for Red Line Extension to Alcântara

The Metropolitano de Lisboa has received a favorable Environmental Impact Statement from the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA), granting the green light for the planned extension of the Red Line to Alcântara. This approval is a critical step, enabling the execution of the major infrastructure project, with construction work now estimated to commence before the end of the first half of 2025.

The project will extend the Red Line from its current endpoint at São Sebastião to a new terminus in Alcântara, a key transport and residential hub in the western part of Lisbon. The extension is a cornerstone of the city's plan to enhance its public transportation network, improve urban mobility, and promote more sustainable travel options.

This development is part of a wider expansion of Lisbon's public transport system, which includes the ongoing construction of the Circular Line, connecting the Rato and Cais do Sodré stations. The company recently highlighted the good progress of the Circular Line works, particularly the tunnel construction between the future Estrela and Santos stations.

The approval for the Alcântara extension was announced as the Metro company participates in European Mobility Week 2025. As part of the event, an interactive activity was held at Cais do Sodré station to engage the public in a discussion about the future of urban mobility and to raise awareness about the importance of community participation in building a more sustainable city.

In a statement, Metropolitano de Lisboa emphasized that the initiative reinforces its "commitment to promoting sustainable, efficient, and environmentally responsible transport solutions." The company reaffirmed its structuring role in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area by providing a safe, high-quality public transport service with a reduced environmental impact.

The statement also referenced a separate €490 million investment for a new Surface Light Rail system that will connect Lisbon to the neighboring municipalities of Oeiras and Loures, further contributing to sustainable urban mobility in the region.

The extension of the Red Line to Alcântara is expected to have a significant positive impact on the local area, improving connectivity for residents and businesses and likely influencing property development and values in the district.
